The Vundu Virus
February 25th, 2009So as an avid fan of soul / funk / disco classics from the 70’s and early 80’s, I felt the desire to enhance my collection this past weekend by going on a quest for some new tunes. Well turns out the joke was on me as after my endless search (which turned up some decent tracks) I noticed some strange behavior on my PC. I was privileged to experience various popups trying to sell me antispyware apps, my explorer wouldn’t load on startup, etc. I proceeded to run a virus scan with my Symantec AV client and a thorough scan with spyware terminator. Neither was any match for the culprit that attacked my system, however I did learn that what had taken up residence on my system was the “Vundu” virus.
After searching for about 15 or so minutes, I found a forum which claimed that Vundu could be eradicated with an application named Malwarebytes. Sure enough, I installed the app, scheduled a full scan, and was privileged to see that Vundu had been evicted from my already shakey system. My advice to anyone with Vundu is to get a copy of Malwarebytes ASAP.
